大叔父は若いときに招集されて、中国大陸で戦闘に明け暮れた。
敗戦後、復員し、思い出したように当時のことを話した。

そのひとつ:
　
功を焦って、無謀な作戦を企てる上官がいると、全滅を恐れる部下が密かに始末した。
そこはよくしたもので、たいていどこの部隊本部にもベテランの事務担当がいて、
てなれたやりかたで、「名誉の戦死」 にしたてて、内地へ報告した。
　
「どこそこの部隊で上官が戦死」 といううわさは、展開する各地の部隊にただちに伝わり、
「さては、やられたな」 と兵士同士でささやきあうものだった。
　
軍隊の裏のしきたりをよく知った上官は、無謀な戦闘は極力避けた。
強い敵には、遭遇せぬよう迂回し、
もっぱら、弱い敵だけを襲わせ、後方に戦果を誇大報告した。
　
日中戦争の戦史で 「一部隊全滅（玉砕）」 という事例が少ないのはこういう事情による。
